Published in 1925, it is a model work of the way of conceiving the novel Azorín. Three years earlier he had published Don Juan, although he was in a period of great production of essays. As we know, "Azorín" was, first, the surname of the protagonist of several important stories, although the initials of José Martínez Ruiz. After La Voluntad (1902), in which this character is defeated, in obvious symbolism of the failure of a generation, it is used as a pseudonym for Martínez Ruiz himself. The use of the pseudonym was not the product of a simple whim, but rather coincided with a progressive abandonment of the desire to intervene with literature in the immediate transformation of society. Azorín is thus more contemplative than Martínez Ruiz. Azorín's novel is perhaps not a read for those who are not a good and experienced reader, but those who know how to stop at each line, seeking the enjoyment of a way of writing and turning the story into a personal discourse, will find in Doña Inés one of the greatest pieces of Spanish literature.
