| Volume V of the "Complete Works". Through the pages of Spain (1909) there still seems to be that concern for the national decadence that characterized the writers of '98. With a more serene outlook than in his youthful years, José Martínez Ruiz seeks the spirit of Spain through its men and landscapes. Men, who are sometimes literary characters and other times, intrahistorical beings with opaque lives. Landscapes, which in their rich variety, show us the beauty of the old Spanish cities. This work, following the postulates of the Free Institution of Education, deeply impressed Don Francisco Giner de los Ríos himself due to its air of hopelessness and resignation. |
