Written by Maupasant in the summer of 1887, this novel vividly describes the atmosphere of the streets of a maritime city, the crowded cafes, the joyful summer weather, the sea voyages..., an atmosphere that surrounds the restful life of a family of the French petite bourgeoisie at the end of the 19th century, and the development of a family drama. This masterful story, made into a film on several occasions, inspired Buñuel's film, A Woman Without Love, in 1951.
